Grenfell - Kory Ginnis of Grenfell has won his second bull riding championship at Agribition.
Ginnis 30, won his first title in 2006 and his second this year in 2008. He took the championship after receiving the highest marks for four of five rides, totaling a score of 180 championship points.
"I won the first three go rounds so I'm pretty happy with all of my bulls that I drew and the rides I was making until Saturday afternoon (when) I ended up third," said Ginnis of the bull riding championship.
Winning the championship a couple of years ago, Ginnis said he was prepared for the competition this year although the race for the title was a little more intense.
"On the Saturday night, if the guy two spots ahead of me would have rode his bull (and completed the ride), I would have had to ride to win, otherwise he would have beat me," he said. "It was a little closer this year so it was a little more nerve racking."
Ginnis started riding steers at the age of nine and bulls since the age of fourteen. During his 21 years of experience, he has ridden bulls in various competitions including the Manitoba Rodeo Cowboys Association (MRCA), the Canadian Rodeo Cowboys Association (CRCA) and has even tried his hand at the professional level in 2001 for a short while.
His hard work and activity in the ring has helped keep Ginnis in good physical shape and mentally prepared over the years, for the challenging sport of bull riding.
"I had a good year. I won I think thirteen rodeos throughout the season, so I had a good season," said Ginnis adding "I got second in the MRCA finals (this year) so I was pretty confident and happy with my bulls I had and I was pretty confident going into the finals (at Agribition)."
As the 2008 Bull Riding Champ, Ginnis took home just under $5000 in prize money as well as a few cherished items. They included an engraved saddle that was donated by the parents of a close friend who passed away in 2001, Burt Thompson, a silver and gold buckle and trophy spurs.
While Ginnis was the oldest competitor in the bull riding category, he believes his years of riding have provided him with enough training and practical experience to compete at all levels and against all ages.
Ginnis, like all other competitors in this category was bucked off in the final go round. He placed first in rounds one, two and three with scores of 80.5, 84.5, 84.50 consecutively and placed third in the fourth go round with a score of 79.5. Still, it was enough to clinch first place overall and win the 2008 Bull Riding Championship at Agribition.
Ginnis has enjoyed bull riding and competing at all levels throughout his lifetime and hopes to continue doing the sport he loves for a little while longer.
"I think I've got a few years left in me yet."
