New Broadview football camp teaches fundamentals
Football fever is spreading fast, and it’s not just for city kids anymore. A new football camp in Broadview is giving local kids from grades 5 through 9 a chance not only to play the game, but to learn all of the basics from experienced coaches.
“There’s no experience necessary – they’ll be taught the fundamentals,” said Jeremy Hodgins, who will be coaching at the camp. “It’s more or less to give the young guys an idea of what it feels like to put the equipment on, learn to give a hit and receive a hit.”
Hodgins says they hope to have between 20 and 30 kids signed up for the camp, which will run every Sunday, May 22 to June 12, from 2:00 to 5:00 PM.
“We’ll only go ahead if we have significant interest. If we only get ten kids, we probably can’t do it,” Hodgins added.
Hodgins hopes kids will sign up as soon as possible, but registrations will be accepted until the weekend before the first practice.
“We’re definitely going to have a lot of fun – a lot of fun drills and healthy competition,” Hodgins said.
Jesse Bradley, who spearheaded the idea for the camp, will also be coaching, along with Chris Chudyk.
Hodgins has also been working on getting a Regina Minor Football affiliate team started in Grenfell. He has had such a positive response that he has now officially applied for affiliation, and it looks like the team will go ahead. He recently held an informational meeting in Grenfell to address parents’ questions and concerns.
“The meeting went really, really well,” Hodgins said. “I got about five more kids that night alone and then I still have about four more that I’ve really worked on that I hope will play too,” Hodgins added. He feels the upcoming camp will provide the added benefit of preparing any players thinking of joining the RMF team.
“It’ll give them a crash course on contact football. If they’re playing on my team in the fall, they’re not going to be so surprised,” he said. “I always think it’s a good idea to take any type of camp you can. Any higher level of training is great.”
