Grenfell - On Sunday February 7th the Grenfell Spitfires opened their provincial series with the Assiniboia Rebels in front of a large crowd at the GRPA. After an excellent and well attended supper before the game used as a fundraiser for the Grenfell Athletic Association - the Spits set to work on the Rebels in the opening game of a 2- game total point first round series.
In front of the largest crowd of the year, Grenfell wasted no time in dismantling the Rebels defence, scoring just a few minutes in on an absolute beauty from alternate captain Dan Wilson. They never looked back, as Brett Cross let a laser beam go from the blueline to make it 2-0, then Wilson added another to make it 3-0. All said and done, the game ended 10-0 in favor of the boys of winter, with Logan Dew netting 4 goals, and Brett Cross with 3. The game also marked the first shut-out of the year and first in almost 3 years for the club, as Kelly Lueck was strong in net as always. Although he wasnt tested often, when he was he faced quality scoring opportunities and he stood tall.
The win put Grenfell in a formidable position heading back to Assiniboia on February 14th, a game yet to be played at press time.
In league news, the Spits are continuing their impressive winning streak. They are now up to a stunning 10 game winning streak and have won 16 of their last 17 games. Wins last week were 11-3 over Gordons, a hard fought battle and game described by GM Dale Hardy as the best game of the year, 5-4 over Milestone, and finally a 12-2 romping of the Kelliher Comets. The last game of the weekend over Kelliher was an amazing game by the top line of Brennan Holloway, Brett Cross and Justin Wilchynski. Cross and Holloway each tallied 10 points, and Wilchynski chipped in with 9.
As of the date this article will be released, the regular season and first round of provincials will have wrapped up. Dates for the second round provincials if necessary, and the first round of playoffs are yet to be determined.
Look for updates on signs around town, the Spitfires sign on the north end of main street, the league website at www.qvhl.ca, or from any executive member of the team. I look forward to seeing you all at the upcoming games!!!
