Grenfell - We are the champions.
It's a song by famed rock band Queen and one that the Grenfell Titans were singing Saturday night after they took the 2008 Tri-Highway Men's Fastball League Championship.
"It feels good. It was a long time coming," said Titans coach and centerfielder, Tyler Thomlinson.
It's the first championship for the Grenfell Titans in their nine year history together.
Although it may feel like fall outside, neither the rain nor the cold deterred the boys of summer from playing ball this weekend.
And they faced a determined Balcarres Bronx team in the finals.
"We faced them quite a few times (in the regular season), we played with them quite a few times, we went to the provincials with Balcarres and we went down to the States with Balcarres. So we know
that they're a very strong ball club and we expected them to be back in the finals," said Thomlinson noting that the Bronx were the second place team all year and were the 2007 defending league champions. "They were the team to beat in our eyes and we're happy that we beat them."
The final series took place this weekend in Grenfell and it took just three games for the Titans to put the Bronx away.
"Both Balcarres and us put up a really good fight and we were able to come out on top in both games (on Friday) with a couple of clutch hits and some really good pitching by Jeremy," said Thomlinson.
A double header was held Friday night and saw the Titans rally on their way to two shutouts that included a 4-0 win in game one and a close 2-0 victory in game two.
In game one, Troy Lowenberg was 2-3 with 2 RBI and Titans pitcher, Jeremy Kenny threw seven innings, giving up three hits and no runs.
In game two, Jeremy Kenny pitched a no- hitter, while Braden Reiger lead off with a double and Tyler Thomlinson hit a home run in the sixth inning.
In game three, which was also held in Grenfell on Saturday saw Thomlinson go 2-4 with a triple, a double and 3 RBI. The Titans took the league championship in game three with a well earned 10-4 victory at home.
Despite the late games and cold weather, Thomlinson says there was a great turnout for the final series with many Titan fans braving the elements to cheer their team on.
With all three games played in Grenfell, Thomlinson says it may have put the odds in their favour.
"We were really, really impressed (with fan turnout)," he said. "We were wondering how many people would come out, just based on the fact that we played on such short notice and that it was so late at night. But we actually had a huge turnout."
He added. "I think (home advantage) did help us. I think we had an extra jump in our step. Many people came out and cheered and the crowd was lively. It was a really nice atmosphere for us."
Thomlinson pointed out some fastball history in Grenfell and says, that although it was a late finish to the season, it ended exactly how they wanted it to.
"The Grenfell Gems before us won a lot of league titles. They were one of the premiere teams in southern Saskatchewan for the entire decade of the '90s and now it's good for us to finally win our first championship."
