Broadview - It's often said that the play-offs in any sport, are a whole new ball game.
And for the Broadview Buffs of the Southeast Fastball League, that statement couldn't be more true.
"We've actually come around a lot since the end of the regular season," said Broadview Buffs coach, Brett Holloway. "We've scored 87 runs in total in the play-offs so far - that's only in 6 games. We're averaging 14.7 runs per game right now."
Those statistics may not be surprising for some sports fans, but the Buffs had a difficult year with many ups and downs.
"We struggled a lot during the regular season. We finished in last place this year with just three wins," said Holloway noting the teams improvement.
"We've already got two more wins than we did all season, and that's with a loss. So we've really turned it around in these play-offs."
The Broadview Buffs are facing the Whitewood Falcons in this years finals and as of press time, had won game one with a convincing 19-9 victory.
"They were the one team that we beat twice this year and we won the season series against them," said Holloway adding that at this point in the playoffs, the Buffs are a confident team.
"We got guys hitting home runs left and right and guys with two out, starting a rally late in the game, just to get us going," he said. "It's been unbelievable right now."
Holloway pointed out some of the reasons why the team has taken it's play to the next level and has been so successful.
"In the play-offs here, we're just a well rounded team. We haven't had any errors yet, so far in the last six games. Our hitting (is great), our pitchers are striking guys out at key points," said Holloway adding, "a lot of us have been playing together for all our lives, growing up and we're a pretty young team. I'd say it's mostly just smarts on the bases. It's just all coming together as a team here."
The Buffs were in the finals two years ago but lost the championship to the Fleming Jets in four games in the best of five series.
With their hard work and perseverance laying the groundwork for this year's finals, Holloway says his team is more than ready to bring a championship home to Broadview.
Something they haven't seen in that town since 1993.
"It's long overdue for us," said Holloway. "That has a lot to do with our determination. We've been wanting this for six years now, since our team's been together," he said adding "it's driving us right now to do our best and win a championship."
