On April 26, 2012, at approximately 12:10 pm, Moosomin RCMP and Fire Department responded to a bomb threat at McNaughton High School in Moosomin.
A note was found was found by a student in the school saying there was a bomb that would go off in 24 hours. Staff cleared the school during the lunch period and the school was locked down until RCMP Explosives Disposal Unit and Police Dog Services Member were able to complete a sweep of the building. The nearby Daycare and Elementary Schools were evacuated and neighbourhood residents adjacent to the school were notified of the threat as well. Nothing was found in the sweep and the decision was made to keep the school closed past the 24 hour deadline.
Late last night, Moosomin RCMP received tip information that has led to the arrest of two 15 year old female students. Police have confirmed that the note was a hoax and this matter is still under investigation.
This incident was considered real until such time as it was confirmed a hoax and the total cost is yet to be determined. Not only was school temporarily suspended, Fire Department and Police resources were deployed at a cost to the public and families and businesses were disrupted as parents responded to calls to collect the evacuated students.
The RCMP in conjunction with the South East Cornerstone Public School Division wish to reassure the public that this matter is being taken very seriously. Anyone with further information is asked to contact the Moosomin RCMP at 306-435-3361.
