Melville - The King George Hotel in Melville has burned to the ground in a devastating fire that broke out on Wednesday, February 17.
The fire is believed to have started in the kitchen, but the exact cause is still under investigation.
The hotel was undergoing renovations at the time of the fire, and there were no guests staying at the hotel, with the exception of at least one long-term resident.
Minor injuries were reported, but everyone escaped the building without being seriously hurt.
The Melville Fire Department, along with fire scene examiners, spent much of Wednesday extinguishing hot spots from the blaze.
The King George Hotel is one of Melvilles most recognizable landmarks, and is over 100 years old. It was constructed in 1909 under the name "the Windsor Hotel." Its name changed to the King George when new ownership took over in 1919.
Community members were looking forward to the grand reopening of the establishment, which was known for its live entertainment, after extensive renovations.
