They had their motors running and headed out on the highway.

Exhibitors from across the province made the drive to Grenfell on May 19, for the second annual 1-47 Cruisers Indoor Show and Shine.

The local car show brought dozens of exhibitors from outside the region, including Saskatoon, Regina, Estevan, Assiniboia, and Edmonton.

“We’re drawing cars to our show that are top quality,” said Bill Robinson, president of the 1-47 Cruisers. “They’re higher dollar cars and the people that are coming are coming from farther away every time.”

Among the classics was the Exhibitor’s Choice: a 1971 Plymouth Cuda valued at $125,000, which was entered by Lyndon Flaman of Wapella. A second notable entry was the 1967 Chev Camaro (car runs 10.21 at 132 miles per hour) brought by Gord Lerat of Cowessess.

While numbers were slightly down from last year, Robinson said the second annual show was a success.

“Oh, it was real good,” he said of the response. “We had several people tell us it’s one of the best car shows they’ve ever attended.”

“If our dollars and cents are close to last year more people walked through the door than I thought.”

The Show and Shine received 67 registrations this year (with five bikes) compared to 54 cars, nine bikes and one skidoo last year.

The total money raised has not yet been tallied, although organizers say a portion of the proceeds will be donated toward the Save Our Pool fund.

In addition to the featured vehicles, was an SGI information booth, RCMP impaired driving and rollover simulator, freehand artist, beer gardens, concession stand and a Designated Driver Cabaret featuring Odd Man Out, a 50/50 and silent auction.

This year also marked the first that 1-47 Cruisers held a banquet supper for the exhibitors (supper catered by KidSport and bar managed by the Gems).

Into the future, Robinson hopes the show only grows in size and prestige saying next year he hopes for “more cars, more attendance”.
