Red Coat Waste Resource Authority is in discussions with Loraas Disposal to consider a more convenient option of recycling, curb-side recycling.
According to spokesperson from the RCWRA, curb-side recycling may be implemented in Broadview and surrounding area within the coming months.
“The option for RCWRA to consider proceeding with curb-side recycling will likely be available in a few short months,” Marodee Hassler, Operations Managers of RCWRA, wrote in an email to the Express. “However, the process of the Region agreeing or not agreeing to proceed may take months beyond that.”
RCWRA currently contracts Loraas Disposal to provide residential and transfer station waste and recycle services to the Region. Currently, the only option available by RCWRA for recycling is for the recyclables to be separated by the user and delivered to transfer stations and recycle depots.
“Curb-side recycling is a more convenient way of recycling…by making it more convenient, hopefully more individuals would participate in recycling,” said Hassler. “Recycling is a significant key in keeping waste out of the landfill.”
Should the Region move ahead with the implementation of curb-side recycling, time would be required for the negation of a curb-side recycling contract.
Recyclables would continue to be hauled by Loraas Disposal and transported to Crown Shred in Regina where they are sorted and processed.
If the membership agreed to curb-side recycling, it would be made available to all member towns and villages.
If implemented, the cost would be absorbed within the annual levies invoiced to the member communities.
