Grenfell - After three weeks of being on the job, Roger Smith decided it was time to make some positive changes at the Grenfell Koffee House.
"When we originally bought the place, we thought we'd like to (add) soup and sandwiches to the menu," said Smith. "We wanted to wait until I got my feet wet and now is the time that we've decided we'll be starting that," he said.
Initially, the soup and sandwich days will be two days a week on Mondays and Thursdays. Each week will offer a different soup and a different sandwich for customers opting for a healthy but hearty meal in a cozy cafe setting.
"On Monday October 20th, we started with our first soup and sandwich day. We offered hamburger soup with garlic bread or a ham and cheese sandwich," said Smith noting that there will be a good variety offered.
"We're working on quite a few different recipes and we've certainly had a lot of suggestions of what people like. I'm getting an idea of what people were used to before and of course, we want to try different things," he said.
As Smith and his crew get used to the new menu and routine, they hope to offer the lunch menu five days a week. Wednesdays will still be designated sub days, while the other four days of the week will offer different soups, sandwiches and possibly chile on some cold winter days.
Smith feels there is a need to expand his menu at the Koffee House and has taken steps to ensure the soup and sandwich days are a success.
"I've hired extra staff to start, in preparation for soup and sandwich days," he said.
While running his own business is a learning curve for him and his wife Irene, Smith says it's one that he welcomes. And with the new items on tap and expanded menu, it is something both he and the town are looking forward too.
"I've been receiving a lot of feedback about the soup and sandwich days and how much people are looking forward to it," he said adding "and now that it's coming back, people are quite excited about it."
