Broadfiew - Newcomers to the Broadview and District area were given a warm welcome on the evening of Friday, August 8, 2008 at the Broadview Community Centre. During the past approximately three years, roughly 75 new families had moved into the area and giving them a welcoming reception was something talked about but had not materialized.
The Broadview and District Lions Club took on the task of organizing such an event which turned out to be very successful and enjoyable by all in attendance.
The evening commenced with a barbeque hamburger on a bun with condiments plus potato salad, beans, and ice cream & wafers for dessert. A total of 244 people enjoyed this delicious meal which was provided free to the attending 29 newcomer families while permanent residents paid $6.00/plate.
Following supper and cleanup, Master of Ceremonies, Lion Warren Sargent welcomed all present, stated the purpose for this event, and encouraged everyone to mix and meet the newcomers.
He then recognized the organizing committee consisting of Lions members, Bob and Pat Gehrke, Ken Ismond, Laurie Fafard, Gordon Bierd, Bill Singular, and Maurice Lemieux as well as Chamber of Commerce member Doris Norbeck and other Lions members and spouses who had helped out.
A warm round of applause expressed everyone's appreciation for all their hard work to make this event possible. M/C Sargent next introduced all the new people in attendance with families having arrived from various provinces plus two families from the United Kingdom.
Two local talents provided entertainment throughout the evening. Resident, Bob Petrie entertained with his accordian renditions as well as Joan Hansen (nee: Blaus) of Avonlea, Sask. with her singing and guitar playing. Joan was born and schooled in Broadview and is the daughter of Eva and the late, Ernie Blaus.
Joan had the audience singing along with many of the old familiar tunes and, for one song, brought her mother, Eva on stage for a harmonizing duet.
Each newcomer family was provided a "welcome bag" to take home with them. In the shopping bags provided by the Broadview Co-op and Pharmasave was a Broadview & District Lions Club Telephone Directory and Information page, plus information sheets, gifts and discount coupons from various businesses in Broadview and area.
At the conclusion of the evening, newcomer Blondena Merritt on behalf of all the newcomers, expressed thanks and appreciation for the warm welcome and the enjoyable evening that had been provided for them.
